Nailsea is mostly made up of family homes built in the second half of the twentieth century, and many of them still have the insulation they were built with. That usually means a layer well short of the 270mm now recommended.

From glassworks cottages to post-war estates

Long before it became a commuter town for Bristol, Nailsea was a place of small coal pits and, from 1788, a large glassworks. A few cottages and older houses from that period survive, often built of local pennant sandstone, with low roofs, small lofts and a mix of old timbers that have been repaired over the years.

Most of the town, though, is much newer. Nailsea expanded rapidly after the war, and estates of semis, detached houses, bungalows and short terraces now spread out from the centre. Homes from this era typically have trussed rafter roofs: the timber webs criss-crossing the loft make it awkward to move around, and the insulation laid between the ceiling joists is commonly 100mm or less.

On the western side of town the land drops towards the moors and the levels beyond, which are low, open and damp. Homes on that edge feel the wind more and can see mice and other small animals coming in from the surrounding fields.

Notes for Nailsea homeowners

Topping up existing loft insulation does not normally need building control approval either way, and we install to the depths both sets of guidance recommend.

Trussed roofs are not designed to carry heavy loads, so if you want storage we will be honest about how much you can safely put up there. For depth guidance, see how much loft insulation you need, and for scratching noises, our page on rodent proofing explains what we do.

Loft insulation in Nailsea: FAQs

My loft is full of criss-crossing timbers. Can it still be insulated?

Yes. Those are trussed rafters, common in Nailsea homes built from the 1960s onwards. We lay the first layer of mineral wool between the ceiling joists and a second layer across them, working around the truss webs. It takes a bit more care than an open loft, but the result is a full, even depth.

Can you insulate a bungalow loft?

Bungalows are some of the best candidates, because the loft sits over every room in the house. More of the heat is lost upwards than in a two-storey home of similar size, so a proper depth of insulation makes a real difference. Hatches in bungalows are often in a hallway ceiling, and we protect the area beneath while we work.

Are there older houses in Nailsea that need a different approach?

Yes. A small number of cottages and farmhouses pre-date the town's post-war growth, some built of local pennant sandstone with older timber roofs. These need breathable insulation, careful handling of old ceilings and clear ventilation at the eaves. We check the condition of the roof timbers before recommending anything, and adjust the depth where the roof is low.
