Free loft assessment in Thornbury

Thornbury is an old market town a few miles back from the Severn estuary, with a medieval street plan around its High Street and the Tudor castle at the top of town. Most of its homes are far younger, though, and loft insulation in Thornbury covers everything from period townhouses to the estates that spread out from the 1960s onwards.

From market-town cottages to commuter estates

The centre of Thornbury is a conservation area, with Georgian and Victorian frontages along the High Street and Castle Street, older stone cottages behind them and a scattering of listed buildings. Roofs here vary a great deal: some are steep and roomy, others have been altered over the centuries, leaving awkward, divided roof spaces.

Beyond the centre, Thornbury grew rapidly in the 1960s and 1970s as a commuter town for Bristol, and more estates followed in later decades and on the edges of town. Those houses have conventional pitched or trussed roofs that are easy to work in, but their original insulation is often only a token layer. Being close to the estuary, the town also gets its share of damp westerly weather, so ventilation needs as much thought as depth.

Conservation areas, listed homes and the estuary

If your home is in the town centre conservation area, loft insulation normally needs no permission because nothing changes outside. Listed buildings are different: alterations, even internal ones, can need listed building consent from South Gloucestershire Council, so check before booking work. We will ask about your property's status at the survey.

Spray foam under the roof is an increasing worry when homes come up for sale. Our guide to spray foam removal explains why lenders and surveyors are wary of it, and our depth guide covers what to aim for afterwards.

Loft insulation in Thornbury: FAQs

Why would a buyer's surveyor object to spray foam in a Thornbury loft?

Spray foam bonded to the underside of a roof hides the condition of the rafters and battens, and in some cases it can trap moisture against the timber. Many lenders and surveyors are therefore cautious about it, which can complicate a sale or remortgage. Removing it and insulating the loft floor with mineral wool usually resolves those concerns.

Our older Thornbury cottage has several small roof spaces. Can they all be insulated?

Often, yes. Older properties that have been extended or altered tend to have more than one roof void, sometimes with separate hatches or none at all. We look for safe access to each, insulate what we can reach, and if a space has no access we will tell you what would be needed to get into it.

How much disruption is there on installation day?

Very little for a standard top-up. We lay dust sheets from the door to the hatch, bring the rolls in, and work from the loft for most of the day. You will need clear access to the hatch, and anything stored around it should be moved first. We clear up when we finish and show you the completed loft.
