Lace-mill terraces, old town houses and new estates

Tiverton grew on wool and then on lace, with the Heathcoat lace factory shaping the town from the nineteenth century. Westexe, close to the mill, has rows of Victorian workers' terraces with modest lofts, slate roofs and very little insulation in many cases. Around the town centre you'll also find older stone, brick and cob buildings, some of them listed, with irregular roofs and fragile ceilings.

Through the twentieth century Tiverton spread out with council and private estates of semis and bungalows, and in recent decades large new-build estates have been added on the eastern side of town. The newer homes generally have trussed roofs with decent insulation from the start, but loft space is often limited by the truss layout, and boarding laid straight on top has compressed the insulation.

In older properties, the biggest gains usually come from a full top-up. In newer ones, it is more often about protecting the insulation that is already there while still allowing some storage. Bungalows from the post-war decades sit somewhere in between: easy roofs to work in, but usually with far less insulation than they should have, spread unevenly across a wide floor.

Practical points for Tiverton homes

Parts of Tiverton's centre are conservation areas and some older homes are listed. Insulation laid within a loft is usually low impact, but if your home is listed it's sensible to check with Mid Devon District Council first.

Older properties, particularly cob or stone, need to stay breathable, so we choose materials and keep ventilation clear with that in mind. If you're weighing up options, have a look at SuperFOIL compared with mineral wool, or see our main loft insulation service page for what a standard job involves.

Loft insulation in Tiverton: FAQs

Can you insulate the loft of an old cob or stone cottage?

Usually, yes, with care. Older buildings need moisture to move through the structure, so we avoid anything that would trap damp and we keep the eaves ventilated. Mineral wool is breathable and works well between joists. Where the roof space is too low or awkward, we might suggest multifoil on the rafters instead.

My new-build in Tiverton already has insulation. Is there anything worth doing?

Possibly. Many new-build lofts are insulated reasonably well, but storage boards laid directly on the joists squash that insulation and reduce its effect. Hatches are often draughty too. We can fit a raised storage floor, add insulation where it is thin and fit a proper loft ladder if you want easier access.
